Rescued thoroughbred finds new home

Posted in Horses for the horse crazy at 4:41 pm by HorseGal

On Saturday night Oct. 14 at 6 pm, in a manner befitting a Queen, Princess (Princess Paulownia) arrived at her new home in fine style… a stunning gooseneck trailer attached to an equally impressive huge white truck that I could be happy living in! There were 15 of us to welcome her with open arms. Margie and I were so excited, we stood out in the rain and howling COLD wind and waited… and waited… and waited (they’d gotten lost!!) We just couldn’t go inside and wait!

Princess, 10 yr. old thoroughbred rescued from slaughterhouse, in western tack

I found out Princess was bought from a slaughter house… how horrible. Only 10 years old and sent to slaughter. This family of women (grandmother, daughter and granddaughter) rescues as many horses as they can from these places. Princess was bone-thin when they got her and we think had been used on the racetrack. She has scars from a burn (they think a road burn. like she fell and got it,) but they weren’t sure how she actually got the burns.

They brought Princess home last Spring and nursed her back to health. She still needs about 100 pounds put on her. I promised the women who brought her that Princess was now in a place where she will get a LOT of love and attention. Margie is going to lunge her today and maybe ride her. She’ll keep the riding easy and short… just in the pasture for now. I’m going have Margie show me now to lunge this weekend. I’ve never done it and can’t wait to try it and to learn something new.

Princess seems to be adjusting well, but she’s a little
concerned about all those cows! And she loves the lush green grass,
although we are turning her out for very short times as she hasn’t had a lot
of grass and we don’t want her to get sick [colic or founder.] What a voracious
appetite she has! She is white with all these spots that have red in them… like
a roan red. Her face looks like freckles and she has beautiful white eyelashes
that really stand out against her brown eyes. We’re thinking of changing
her name and I like Freckles!

P.S.
Friday was my b’day and guess what Margie gave me… my VERY OWN western
bridle with snaffle bit!! When I rode Sam, I used Margie’s old Western saddle
(which I’ll continue to use,) but I had to use Margie’s English bridle (Margie
rides and prefers English) which didn’t cause any problems, but I
really love all the Western tack and it’s nice when it’s all the same.
Now I have a Western bridle… and it’s all my OWN, Connie! It’s
beautiful… and I love that leather smell. Princess has been ridden mostly
Western.

Face with pretty eyes, gray roan thoroughbred rescue mare

* Note from Margie:
She is not really gray but roan - brown hairs mixed in though she looks gray unless you are close up.  Her Dad was Roman Reasoning and her Mom Janet Planet!! Their vet thinks she may have foaled, but not sure as she is a rescue horse. They have a friend in NJ who looks for horses for them when she sees something good.  They bought it for the older daughter- the younger is really into barrel racing - you will see their magnificent trailer next weekend- but the older isn’t so they bought Princess for her for trail riding but she is off to college and not interested.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Princess was bought by Margie, who kindly shares her horses with HorseGal. Sam was a previous shared horse who passed away.]

It is so nice to know that there are people out there that care about those horses that are abuses and starving. Kodos to you!
