Dreaming of Driving a Pair of Horses

Posted in Horses for the horse crazy at 10:51 am by glendale

We have longer-term hopes that we can teach Gilford and Glendale to drive together as a team. Hubby is especially keen to do this– ever since we started into driving in 1999 when we got Abby and a Meadowbrook cart, he has been interested in having a 4-wheel carriage which could be pulled by a team. (He is actually more fond of driving than I am– I really feel more in control astride but it is certainly easier on the butt to be in a carriage, and I am coming to enjoy it more and more!)

When we were breeding Willy for our second foal (Gilford was a yearling at the time), Hubby says to me — Maybe we can get a matched pair.– I replied to him — If you really want a color-matched pair you better BUY the second horse to match Gilford!–

We didn’t, so sure enough even with the same parents, Glendale came out brown bay not black bay. At ages 4 and 2 they are now matched in size and stride and they have the same white markings (white stars and white hind socks) but Gil is black and Glen is brown.

Oh well, we drive for fun not fancy showing, and they do get along well with each other, and their temperaments are similar though Glen is a bit more energetic than Gilford, so chances are they will drive together pretty well. We are hoping to keep up some training this winter by trailering to a local indoor arena, and will be aiming at putting mileage on Glendale, starting Gilford into a 4-wheel carriage, and figuring out how to pair them up! Any advice is appreciated– stay tuned!!
